A Bikes Tale
At the end of 1989 summer, I was stuck in a heartbroken and nostalgic mood, feeling isolated and abandoned in an unknown city, Padua-Italy, after had broken up with my boyfriend in the middle of a trip to Italy.
One day, I took my camera and I could not help to photograph any bike I found on my way. Like a bike thief I had followed an imperative compulsion. I have later realized that bikes reflected the abandon and solitude I was going through.
Every time I have exhibited this series, audiences have also experienced a nostalgic mood as well. Included the elderly inhabitants of Padua, for whom those photographs represent an emotional ride through the city that no longer exists, the one it used to be before automobiles and modern times. Maybe, everyone – as well as me – has a story to remember about a bicycle.
